uropean bishops promise to act quickly in abuse cases

11:10, 2010-Jul-29 .. 0 comments .. Link

VATICAN CITY - Swiss bishops urge victims of clerical abuse to file criminal complaints and are considering creating a national registry for pedophile priests. Danish bishops launch an investigation into decades-old claims. Austria's senior bishop celebrates a Holy Week Mass of repentance.

A week after Pope Benedict XVI excoriated Irish bishops for gross errors of judgment in handling cases of priests who sexually abuse children, European bishops are admitting to mistakes, reaching out to victims and promising to act quickly when they learn about abuse cases.

Their mea culpas and pledges to be more transparent and cooperative in the future come amid mounting public outrage over the scope of the abuse and what victims say has been a pattern of coverup by bishops - and the Vatican itself - to keep the cases quiet.

"It's about improving things," Swiss Bishops Conference spokesman Walter Mueller said Wednesday, as Swiss bishops admitted in a statement that they had ed hardy hoodies underestimated the problem and are now telling victims to consider filing criminal complaints.

In Austria, Cardinal Christophe Schoenborn was to celebrate a Holy Week Mass Wednesday evening for abuse victims in what is being billed as a "sign of repentance" just days before Easter.

Schoenborn was named Vienna archbishop in 1995, tasked to clean up the mess in the diocese after Cardinal Hans Hermann Groer was forced to resign as archbishop over allegations that he molested youths at a monastery in the 1970s.

Several years later, the church was again rocked by the discovery of up to 40,000 lurid images at a seminary in St. Poelten, 50 miles west of Vienna, including child porn and photos of young candidates for the priesthood fondling each other and their older religious instructors.

Amid renewed outrage over Europe's sexual-abuse scandals, Schoenborn announced over the weekend the creation of an independent, clergy-free commission headed by a woman to suggest ways to strengthen church guidelines for dealing with sexual abuse.

Switzerland, home of the Swiss Guard that protects the pope at the Vatican, is considering the radical idea of creating a central registry of pedophile priests to prevent them from coming into contact with children.

Swiss President Doris Leuthard has come out in favor of the proposal; the president of the Swiss Bishops' Conference, Norbert Brunner, has said he doesn't see the point. Swiss bishops are split.

LED light bulbs Additionally, Switzerland and Germany are considering mandatory, or automatic reporting requirements for bishops. In Switzerland, priests aren't required by national law to inform police of possible sexual abuse cases. This is only required of civil servants such as teachers, professors, and policemen.

The Catholic Church in Denmark announced that it will investigate claims of clerical abuse dating back several decades.

Risks and Important Considerations

The value of the Shares relates directly to the value of the gold, silver, palladium and platinum held by the Trusts and fluctuations in the price of gold, silver, palladium and platinum could materially adversely affect an investment in the Shares. Several factors may affect the price of gold, silver, palladium and platinum, including: A change in economic conditions, such as a recession, can adversely affect the price of gold, silver, palladium and platinum. Gold, silver, palladium and platinum are used in a wide range of industrial applications, and an economic downturn could have a negative impact on its demand and, consequently, its price and the price of the Shares; Investors' expectations with respect to the rate of inflation; Currency exchange rates; Interest rates; Investment and trading activities of hedge funds and commodity funds; and global or regional political, economic or financial events and situations. Should there be an increase in the level of hedge activity of bullion producing companies, it could cause a http:// www.wubags.com/handbags-d/ decline in world prices, adversely affecting the price of the Shares. Also, should the speculative community take a negative view towards bullion, it could cause a decline in world gold, silver, palladium and platinum prices, negatively impacting the price of the Shares. There is a risk that part or all of the Trust's gold, silver, palladium and platinum could be lost, damaged or stolen. Failure by the Custodian or Sub-Custodian to exercise due care in the safekeeping of the precious metal held by the Trusts could result in a loss to the Trusts. Investments in the trusts do not constitute a direct investment in the underlying metals.

Enthusiasts aim to save motorcyclists

11:00, 2010-Jul-29 .. 0 comments .. Link

Motorcyclists have a shocking crash record. Hamilton Ulysses Club is trying to do something about it with a new mentoring programme.

Do you know what the pressure is on your motorbike tyres, how to adjust the chain or what about counter steering and those disappearing edges on corners?

It's standard knowledge motorcycle riders should be equipped with, according to Bruce Marx of Hamilton's branch of the Ulysses Club. But the long-time rider says he's often amazed at the lack of knowledge amongst some fellow motorcyclists.

"We had a gentleman who returned to riding five years ago on a new 1100cc machine which had just failed a WOF check because the front brake pots had seized," Marx says. "He told me that he never ever used his front brake. But on that model of bike 80 per cent of his stopping power was on the front wheel."

For Marx and his fellow Ulysses Club members, the fact that young riders and those returning to motorcycling after a long break featured disproportionately in crash statistics was motivation enough to establish, with the support of ACC, a mentoring service for these groups of riders.

Marx says he discovered a report commissioned by ACC into fatal motorcycle accidents that outlined the three categories of riders who featured.

"The inexperienced featured as the largest group," he says. "Then came the born-again riders and then lastly, what was left."

Marx says the last group appeared to follow the same pattern.

Chelsea

"A history of offs, pushing the limits and numerous convictions for traffic and criminal offences. These riders would rather be seen dead than attend training days so I guess that's how we will see them. We decided no matter what we did they would kill themselves," he says soberly.

So targeting those with learners or restricted licences has become the aim for the club.

He says "apart from the basic skills courses, these riders were often left to their own devices and more by good luck than anything else survived. The cost of training from a professional was often beyond the reach of many."

Marx points out they are not offering training to riders, but mentoring from experienced riders who have years of accident free motoring.

"It is more guidance," he says. "We endeavour to ride in every condition; rain, fog, open road and heavy city traffic. A lot wa tches-f of time is spent on slow riding in a large car park."

And the group has organised a long dead-end road with a braking area marked out.

Mentoring is provided on a one-to-one basis and can usually bring about marked improvements in rider safety.

Over the last five years the group has mentored more than 100 riders of varying degrees of experience.

"On our frequent riding courses, the instructors have remarked that those riders who have been mentored are in the top 75 per cent of skilled riders compared to the remaining riders," Marx says.

The focus of ACC campaigns turned some time back from educating motorists to look out for motorcycles to training motorcyclists to take more responsibility for their own safety, Marx says.

"The mentoring we offer is free and is part of us helping to achieve that."

* Transport Ministry statistics show in the 12 months to the end of May 2010 there were 50 motorcyclists killed on our roads and 1369 injured.

Of those the largest age group represented in the fatalities were aged between 35-44 years with 18 deaths. The highest number injured was 407 15-24 year olds with 12 deaths in this age group.

England's Sunday worst nightmare

Byline: Dave Kidd

WHEN you have followed the fortunes of England's football and cricket teams for many years, there are always plenty of low moments. But for a one-off hour few could compete with 1.30pm to 2.30pm last Sunday.

England aiming to add to first triumph

10:50, 2010-Jul-29 .. 0 comments .. Link

Paul Collingwood has led England to a piece of cricket history and is already planning some more from his "scary" team in the near future, writes David Clough.

Sunday's seven-wicket trouncing of Australia at Kensington Oval gave England their first International Cricket Council tournament triumph in 35 years of trying.

However, after winning the World Twenty20, Collingwood made it clear he has his sights set on the type of lasting success that defines a truly outstanding team.

He said: "We're not going to get carried away. We're going to savour the moment and enjoy it, because we deserve to, but good teams kick on and that's exactly what we'll Algeria get drilled into the guys. We've got a lot more potential as well, that's the scary part about it. We can go even further."

Collingwood cited player of the tournament Kevin Pietersen's welter of runs, new opening pair Craig Kieswetter and Michael Lumb and the bowling unit as the pillars of England's success.

He said: "The bowlers have done a fantastic job. No team has really got hold of us. A lot of credit goes to them for their thought processes and the execution of plans have been absolutely spot-on."

A Test series against wa tches-s Bangladesh starts next week for some of the Twenty20 squad, with one-day internationals on the agenda against the same opposition and Australia this summer before a sub- Continental World Cup and then the Ashes next winter.

Collingwood added: "I'm sure we'll get our feet back on the ground in a few days' time and keep working hard.

"Straussy [Andrew Strauss] comes back as captain and we'll get his team ethos and ideas. That's been a big part of this victory as well, what [coach] Andy Flower and Andrew Strauss have done over the past year. They've got the team pointing in the right direction.

"There are guys who've come in and made a name for themselves, like Kiesy and Lumby at the top of the order. Yards [left-arm spinner Michael Yardy] has done a fantastic job for us as well. These are guys nobody would have known when they came into this tournament."

Emotions run deep for fun-loving Watson during playoff triumph

08:42, 2010-Jul-29 .. 0 comments .. Link

CROMWELL -- Bubba Watson's mood changed from one instant to the next, from happy-go-lucky quipster to tearful, then thankful, and all shades of real in between. Watson is an unusually popular PGA Tour player, despite having never won in five years before striking it rich at the Travelers Championship Sunday with a two-hole playoff victory over Scott Verplank and Corey Pavin.

Part of it stems from the fact he's pure testosterone off the tee, averaging a PGA Tour-leading 304.5 yards per drive. He hit one 396 yards on the 72nd hole Sunday. Take away the aid of the cart path on the drive and it probably wasn't an inch over 375 yards.

But he also has the "it" quality, which we'll describe as a visible love of the game. He's competing against guys that are so intense, week after week, that it's almost a felony to act like you're having fun out on the course.

He doesn't chirp quite like Fuzzy Zoeller used to, but there's no masking his enjoyment. He won't pretend, for macho sake, that he's not nervous when he is. "That putt I made for par to win," he said, "I don't remember taking the putter back. I just remember that one arm went one way and the other arm went the other way and somehow it went straight in the hole." On the previous putt, a 40-footer or so, he said he couldn't breath.

He has a laugh-out-loud self deprecating sense of humor that is nearly extinct in the bitter-beer-face of the rank and file PGA Tour player. "My dad taught me everything I know ... though it's not very much," he cracked.

Washington Capitals

And his emotional side was raw when talking about his dad's battle with cancer and how doctors

See Solomon, C3 recently were concerned his wife Angie had a brain tumor. Watson broke down as he relayed that story, tried to talk through it, failed at first, and then started to get his voice back.

"You know, I've never had a lesson," said Watson - a trait we find so refreshing in the midst of all the hysteria over who the next swing coach for Tiger Woods will be. "My dad, he took me to the golf course when I was six years old and he just told me he was going to be in the woods looking for his ball. He told me to take this 9 iron and beat it down the fairway. And now look at me, after beating a 9-iron on the fairway, coming from Bagdad, Florida, I never dreamed this."

His voice was straining again. "Hopefully people see that I'm enjoying the game and like to cut up and have fun. You know what, this is a job, but why be bored at your job? Why not have fun with it."

Pavin, a player with touch and feel and personality, too, talked about Watson's love of the game as well, saying that "What I love about the way he plays the game, is that he doesn't care what it looks like. He just goes out and plays by feel. I think that's the way golf is meant to be played. There's a lot of guys who play mechanically, too, which is fine. But it's fun to watch somebody who plays just from his natural ability and feels his way around the golf course."

As enjoyable as it was to see Watson break into the winner's circle, when we reflect back on the 2010 Travelers, the wonderful theater it created was more a case of Justin Rose and Ben Curtis squirreling the tournament away than any one of the three playoff golfers winning the tournament.

The way Rose and Curtis performed, scared and ineffectual, you would have thought it was Tiger Woods chasing the leaders instead of a 50-year-old guy with a foot out on the Champions Tour, another who's not far behind, and a Tour non-winner in five years.

All Rose needed to do was shoot a 1-over-par 71 to win the Championship, and Curtis didn't need much better. A 68, 2-under- par, would have gotten it done for Curtis on a course in which it took minus-2 to make the cut. Collectively, the final pairing was 7 over par.

"When I think back, shooting 4-under (66) ... there's no way that wins," said Watson, who began the day six shots off the lead. "Let's be realistic about it. For us three guys to get in a playoff ... it's weird. No way we could have expected that."

In fact, no one from the final three groups got a sniff of the playoffs.

In its own, understated way, the TPC-River Highlands emerged as a winner when the PGA Tour's shortest hitter, Pavin, and longest hitter, Watson, tied for the 72 hole-lead. Usually a course will play to either a long hitter's strength or a shot-maker's strength, but the TPC allows both to excel.

wa tches-p

"A course doesn't have to be any length in particular, but when you get the longest player on Tour and the shortest player on Tour contending to win a golf tournament, I think that's a very good sign for an ideal golf course," said Pavin.

Verplank, slightly below average in driving distance, agreed, that the TPC is a "good tournament track. It's not the U.S. Open, but it's not supposed to be," he said. "It's a lot more exciting when guys are making eagles and birdies - and then if a guy has a wreck on one of the last holes, it makes it even more exciting."

The beauty of the TPC is that there are train wrecks lurking on the back nine. The 15th swallowed up Justin Rose whole when he yanked his drive into the water and it got worse from there. And the 17th, the signature hole, nearly wrecked havoc with Watson, who drove into the fairway bunker on 17, and then, needing some shot- making excellence to find the green, hit a miserable second shot into the lake and took double bogey.
